FSSAI Licence
FSSAI stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI is a statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It is responsible for regulating and supervising the safety and standards of food products in India. FSSAI’s primary objective is to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for consumption by the public.
FSSAI issues a license or registration to food businesses based on their scale of operation and turnover. The license is known as the FSSAI License, which is mandatory for all food businesses in India. The license ensures that food businesses comply with the necessary food safety standards and regulations. The license helps in enhancing consumer confidence in the quality of food products and facilitates the smooth functioning of the food industry.
The FSSAI license is categorized into three types based on the scale and size of the food business:
FSSAI Basic Registration: This is applicable to small food businesses with an annual turnover of up to Rs. 12 lakhs. It is suitable for businesses such as petty retailers, small-scale food manufacturers, and distributors.
FSSAI State License: This is required for medium-sized food businesses with an annual turnover between Rs. 12 lakhs and Rs. 20 crores. It is applicable to businesses operating within a single state.
FSSAI Central License: This is necessary for large food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crores. It is applicable to businesses that operate in multiple states or have a large-scale presence.
The process of obtaining an FSSAI license involves the following steps:
Determine the Type of License: Food business operators must first determine the category of FSSAI license they need based on their annual turnover and scale of operation.
Application Submission: The food business operator must submit the application for the respective FSSAI license category to the Food and Safety Department of the concerned state or region.
Document Verification: The application and supporting documents are verified by the designated authority to ensure they are complete and accurate.
Inspection: Depending on the category of the license and the risk involved, the designated authority may conduct an inspection of the premises to assess compliance with food safety standards.
License Issuance: If all requirements are met and the inspection, if conducted, is satisfactory, the FSSAI license is issued to the food business operator.
Renewal: FSSAI licenses need to be renewed periodically as per the guidelines set by the regulatory authority.
Having a valid FSSAI license is essential for all food businesses to operate legally and gain the trust of consumers. It demonstrates the commitment of the business towards ensuring the safety and quality of the food products they offer.
